Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: How will kin•dom camp be different from any other summer camp?
A: This camp is gay. At this camp, you get to sleep in a literal castle. Kin•dom camp will be a week for LGBTQIA+ youth to experience belonging and affirmation. The week will include a variety of expected camp activities, such as archery, swimming, and canoeing, as well as incorporate activities and conversations centered on queer history, culture, and experiences.
Q: What types of activities are available for campers?
A: Please check out our Day at Camp *Link* to see what a day at camp would look like for your camper. Activities will include meals together, swimming, physical activities such as Gaga Ball or High Ropes, crafts like friendship bracelets or slime making, queer speakers, and adventures throughout the castle.
Q: My camper is excited about the LGBTQIA+ aspect of camp, but what does it mean that this camp is located at a faith-based camp?
A: While Stronghold programming is typically faith-based, kin·dom does not include any religious content or elements. As a community, we acknowledge the pain and hurt caused by the church to LGBTQIA+ people and support our campers through all of their religious experiences. Our camp-wide curriculum focuses on the queer experience and queer activities.
Q: I am not a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. Can I attend camp as a camper or volunteer?
A: This is a camp by and for LGBTQIA+ folks. We are grateful for the allies in the community, but this camp is intended to provide a space where queer joy can flourish. All campers should be members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Volunteer positions are prioritized for LGBTQIA+ individuals, but we are open to accepting allies in specialized roles, such as those in the mental health field.
Q: What is kin•dom community?
A: kin•dom community is a queer-led organization creating space for queer community, belonging, and celebration. Its current primary focus is on summer camps across the US for LGBTQIA+ tweens and teens. Follow this link to learn more about kin•dom community.
Q: What does “kin•dom” mean?
A: The word “kin•dom” offers a new way to imagine the full inclusion and belonging of all people. It provides an alternative to "kingdom" and allows for a more expansive view of how we are all connected. The word was originally introduced by theologian Ada María Isasi-Díaz, who used it to speak about liberation for all people. This camp is a direct part of kin•dom community, and there is no greater vision we can have for LGBTQIA+ youth than for them to know they belong, are loved, and are free and safe to be their whole selves.
